Is This You

You've Been Thinking About
This for a While.

You don't need anyone to convince you jiu jitsu is worth doing. You've already watched the videos, you've already seen the friend who got into it, you've already had the thought a dozen times. Something keeps stopping you.

Usually it's one of these:

Why Other Options Fail

You've Probably Tried
Some of This Already.

Most people who end up here have already tried the obvious stuff. It usually goes like this:

The regular gym. You went for a few weeks, got bored, your back hurt, you stopped. Lifting weights without a reason gets old fast. Running gets old faster. Neither one teaches you a single thing about your body that you didn't already know.

Group fitness classes. Fine for a workout, terrible for actually learning anything. You leave sweaty. You don't leave with a skill.

Watching jiu jitsu online. You've watched hours of it and not one of those minutes will help you in a live round. You can't learn this from a screen. You can pretend to, but the second somebody is actually trying to choke you it stops being theoretical.

Tried a gym once, didn't go back. This is the most common one. The place felt weird. The coaching was vague. Nobody talked to you. You used the free class, said you'd come back, and you didn't. The problem wasn't you. The gym was off.

All of those things fail for the same reason. None of them were fun, and you weren't getting better at anything you actually cared about. That's it. That's the whole reason.

Who This Is For

Two Kinds of People
Walk Through This Door.

Basin is built for two people. They want different things from training, but the club works for both.

Person One

You've Never Done This Before.

You want a real skill. You want to be in better shape. You want a hard thing to do that doesn't involve getting punched in the face. You want to walk in on day one and not feel stupid. We've got you. The first class explains itself. You'll roll the same night. You'll leave knowing exactly what you did and why it worked.

Person Two

You Already Train.

You know what good coaching looks like and you know when a room is wasting your time. You're tired of being told who you can train with. You don't need another portrait wall, another "professor," another speech about lineage. You want sharp coaching, sharp partners, sharp rounds, and the freedom to cross-train wherever you want. That's the entire offer here.

How It Works

What's Actually Happening
On The Mats.

Most gyms get one or two of the things below right. Almost none get all of them in the same place. There's no secret method. Just a handful of things done well, every class, every week.

  1. 01
Live Rounds From Day One. Every class includes you using the technique on a partner who's actively trying to stop you. Not drilling it. Using it. That's how you learn anything physical. Under pressure, against resistance, the same class you saw it. If you've ever done six weeks of "fundamentals" without a live round, you know how that ends. It ends with you not coming back.
  2. 02
Workshops, Not Sermons. Class is run like a workshop. One concept, broken down clearly, with the why behind it. Multiple voices on the mats. Questions are good. Stopping mid-roll to fix something is good. There's no "shut up and bow, the master is talking." You're an adult paying for a service. You get coached like one.
  3. 03
Coaching That Actually Sees You. The classes stay small on purpose. Coaches actually see you. Habits get caught early. Nobody slips through. Your progress gets tracked over time. You're not a name on a sign-in sheet, and you're not learning by overhearing what someone else got told.
  4. 04
Cross-Training Is Encouraged. Train wherever you want. Visit other gyms. Go to seminars. Roll with whoever. We don't track who you train with on your off days. The work speaks for itself or it doesn't.
  5. 05
Everything Lives in the App. We have our own app where you can sign your waiver, set up your membership, check the class schedule, check in for class, get updates from the gym, and manage everything in one place. It's also how you'll check in for classes and track your training.

First Class Is Free.
Walk In and See.

Show up, tell us it's your first class, and train. That's the whole sign-up. If it's for you, we'll talk membership after. If it's not, no follow-up calls, no pitch at the door.

Who's Running This

The Coach.

Quick context, because you should know who's coaching you.

Canaan Frederick, brown belt, founder of Basin Jiu Jitsu

Canaan Frederick. I started training in 2019, a few months after my father passed. I needed something hard to do. Something that asked everything of me and gave me a way to be in my body instead of my head. Seven years later I haven't stopped.

I've had the pleasure of training under some amazing coaches. Tim Credeur, Jules Bruchez, Josh Artigue, and Heath Henry. I also spent 2022 and 2023 training at Easton in Denver and the surrounding areas, which was an incredible experience, and I came home better for it. I've competed here and there, but I've always had a deeper love for the daily training.

I started coaching in mid-2024 with a class of 3 to 5 year olds. Everyone warned me it would be brutal but it was the opposite. The kids loved me, I loved them, and somewhere in the middle of all that I figured out I was built for this. I took on adult fundamentals shortly after, with everyone from total beginners to a 70-something-year-old in his first gi. The thing people kept telling me was that they actually understood what was being taught, and that stuck.

I'm building Basin with my brother Caleb and my wife Sophia. Breaux Bridge is home, and it deserves a space of this caliber.

What Members Say

The Honest Section.

This is where most landing pages drop in three smiling stock photos and a quote nobody actually said. We're not doing that.

Basin just opened. We have a handful of founding members training right now and we're not going to invent quotes from people who don't exist. Once members have been training long enough to have something honest to say, this section will fill up. Until then, the offer stands on its own. Show up, take a free class, see if the gym is what we say it is.

Questions

Real Questions,
Real Answers.

I'm not in shape. Should I get in shape first?
No. That's the whole trap. People wait until they're "ready" and never start. Jiu jitsu is the workout. You'll be in better shape in two months than you would be running on a treadmill for six. Show up at whatever shape you're in. The class handles it.
I've never done anything like this. Will I look stupid?
Everyone here was new at some point. Including the coach. The first class is built for first-timers. Clear instructions, a partner who knows you're new, a coach watching you specifically. Nobody is judging your first class. They're all too busy thinking about their own next round.
What's the time commitment?
Most people who get serious do two or three classes a week. Some do one. Some do all of them plus open mat. There's no required schedule. You come when you can come, and the schedule is in the app so you can check what's running before you head in.
I'm worried about getting injured.
Reasonable. Jiu jitsu is the safest hard thing you can do. There's no striking, you tap when something is too much, and the round resets. You will get sore. You won't get punched in the face. Injuries usually come from training with someone who's trying to prove something. We don't have those here.
I tried a gym before and didn't like it. Why is this different?
Because most of what you didn't like wasn't jiu jitsu. It was the costume around it. The bowing, the titles, the politics, the "we're a family until you want to train somewhere else" routine. None of that is here. The technique stays. The cosplay goes. Walk in, see for yourself.
What if I can't keep up?
You won't, on day one. Nobody does. The first three weeks of jiu jitsu feel like learning to drive in a foreign country. Then it clicks, and you start seeing the shape of what's actually happening. Stick around for a month before you decide whether you can do this. You can.
Can I try before committing to a membership?
Yes. First class is free, full stop. After that, every paid membership has a 7-day free trial. You don't get charged if you don't stay.
What makes Basin different from other gyms?
Workshops instead of sermons. Live rounds from day one. Cross-training welcomed. No bowing, no "professor," no portraits on the wall, no joining fee, no contract. Small room on purpose so coaching is actually personal. The rest is the same as anywhere good. Clean mats, sharp coaching, real partners.
